OUR HISTORY

For generations, the Elion family has been intimately connected with diamonds. The late Lute Elion came from a family involved in rough and polished diamonds in Amsterdam and Antwerp. He moved to Australia and created Elion & Co. For more than 40 years, Elion & Co has been involved with importing diamonds from Antwerp, Moscow, New York, Tel Aviv.

From the commencement of production at Argyle there has always been a close association between Argyle and Elion. In the early days, Argyle drew on Lute’s experience as a diamond expert employing his skills as a consultant in developing a marketing strategy. Today, the close working relationship continues.

Over the past 20 years the business has grown and now offers a range beyond pink, including coloured and white diamonds.  Elion Diamonds continues to serve retailers nationally with the highest quality products and expertise.

ARGYLE’S STORY

Owned by Rio Tinto, Argyle is the world’s leading supplier of pink diamonds, and these are distributed through a select list of authorised stockists. To date the Argyle Mine, located in the north western region of Australia, has uncovered more than 400 million carats of diamonds. Yet less than one per cent of this amount is made up of their trademark pink diamond. It was the discovery of the pink diamond that took operations at the mine to unthinkable heights, and these precious gems are now the most valuable in the world.

It was during the 1970s that geologists made an incredible discovery in the Kimberley region - a diamond pipe; an extinct volcano crater that was home to millions of carats of diamonds. The pipe is two kilometres long and one kilometre wide, and is known as the AK1 pit. Mining in the AK1 pit is expected to cease this year, but an underground operation should see production continue for another decade.

While Argyle has become the world’s main source of pink diamonds, the supply is predicted to be depleted about 2018.

Customers can trust that Argyle diamonds are mined under ethical and environmentally protected conditions. With recent films and media interest highlighting the Blood Diamond trade, more customers want to know about the origin of retailers stock. Argyle’s record is impeccable. The company has worked with the local indigenous population. In 2004, Argyle signed an agreement with the Traditional Owners of the land acknowledging their rights and interests.

Argyle has also conducted extensive studies and environmental projects to ensure minimum possible damage to the area.

TENDER STORY

The best and rarest of Argyle’s pink diamonds are sold through an international annual tender, to which Elion is invited to view and offer on the stones available. Since its inception in 1985, the Tender has become one of the most exclusive events on the industry’s calendar. With only a select few invited to bid on these gems, the tender diamonds are without doubt the most sought-after gems in the world. These pink diamonds can cost from $100,000 to $1million a carat. Last year 65 diamonds were sold to 17 bidders from around the globe. These tender diamonds are collector stones, and they set the market price for pink diamonds.
